The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago.The second best time is now.

Chinese proverb

I invest my own capital in energy, resources and people. In what outlives us.

Why

I invest my own money.

VANAHEIM is the holding company of Mark C. Reinold. There is no fund and no outside capital here, only private wealth. That is why I review every project myself. Thoroughly and without time pressure.

I have 25 years of experience in digital transformation, more than 120 technology reviews in company acquisitions and 5 start-ups of my own with 3 exits behind me. That taught me what counts in the end: people, clean numbers and staying power.

Every investment has to answer one question. Does it fight climate change, save resources or give people the chance to help themselves? If not, I do not invest.

Roots

Four things have to grow.

I measure every investment against them. A project has to move at least one of them forward.

  1. 01

    A stable climate

Less CO2 through power from wind and sun. What cannot be avoided yet is offset.

  2. 02

    Enough resources

Fewer new goods, more reuse. What already exists should be used for longer.

  3. 03

    Healthy people

Education, health and wellbeing are the basis for everything else.

  4. 04

    Paths of their own

Helping people help themselves, locally and directly. A small loan is often enough to start a business.

Fields

Eight fields on three branches.

This is where my capital works. Directly, as a loan or as an equity stake.

Energy

Power from wind and sun, generated and used where it is needed.

    Wind power

I invest in wind farms across Europe. Directly or through loans, in operating and in planned projects.

    Solar power

I lease roofs and finance the system. The homeowner gets low-cost solar power without investing in it themselves.

    Solar surplus

At midday a system often produces more power than the house and the grid can take. I use that surplus on site for computing power instead of curtailing the system.

Climate and resources

Avoid what can be avoided. Offset what remains.

    Carbon footprint

I regularly measure the holding's CO2 emissions and offset them. Through reforestation in Panama and Tanzania, solar systems in Mauritania, South Africa and Vietnam and climate-neutral cooking stoves in Ghana.

    Resources

I invest in companies that reuse consumer goods. Upcycling instead of new goods.

People

Capital for people who want to build something.

    Self-help

In economically weak regions a small loan is often enough to become self-employed. Banks shy away from that risk. I support people worldwide who want to build something.

    Health

I invest in functional foods and in services that help people stay healthy. A young industry that matters more after years of industrial mass-produced food.

    Business angel

I invest early in young companies whose idea fits one of these fields. With capital, with the experience of five start-ups and with my network.

Together

One tree is not yet a forest.

On my own I move little. That is why I bring together people who share the same goal.

That leads to introductions, shared experience and sometimes honest advice. Always to a conversation between equals.

  • Business angels who want to share experience and contacts
  • Homeowners with a roof or a plot for energy
